I wanted to start my sound culture seminar with a sensory walk, but Amsterdam weather is so unpredictable in autumn. Today came. It is a beautiful crisp autumn afternoon. Stratus clouds speckle the deep blue sky. Out in the sun, summer lingers. Quiet breeze blows languidly. Carillons peal out from every corner of the city. Hoary but trusty grandma bikes rattle past us, bike-bells pugnaciously rung at unwitting flâneurs. Tourist boats slosh through the canals. Trams ding and then rumble on. Today is the day we begin the semester—opening our ears as we sound-map Amsterdam.

Will swimming in the Danube
We are having the most glorious summer and where better spend than in fabulous Vienna with Will Peterson. He arrived yesterday straight from Australia but disregarding jetlag and equipped with a tip from our local friendly waiter, we headed down the Neuedonau and jumped right into the refreshing water. Here is Will exploring the depths of the Danube and me trying out my waterproof S5.

It is May.
April’s anodyne blossoms are now unruly weeds.
